Dr. Gloria Edwards Receives LWR Champion Award

At its meeting this week, the Lutheran World Relief board of directors presented former board chair Dr. Gloria Edwards with the LWR Champion Award, a recognition of exemplary service and partnership with the organization.

Edwards joined the LWR board in 2006, and was elected chair in 2013. She completed her service in February 2016 after reaching the maximum term limit. During her decade on the board, she played a leadership role in two strategic planning processes. She was involved in hiring former CEO Rev. Dr. John Nunes, who served from 2007 to 2013, and current CEO Ambassador Daniel Speckhard, who joined LWR in 2014.

“I knew from the first time I met Gloria, when I came to Baltimore to interview for the job of President and CEO, that this was an organization blessed with strong leadership,” Speckhard said. “Gloria is someone with a sharp intellect, a keen sense of humor, and a deep and abiding faith and sense of mission. It is that sense of mission that has guided her throughout her service on the board.”

A dedicated servant leader, Edwards has previously served in many leadership roles throughout The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. She served on the board of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, and is a past president of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Currently she is chair of the board of regents of Concordia University, Portland, and is a member of the board of directors of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

“Several years ago, I wrote a personal mission statement as part of a women’s convention,” Edwards said. “I wrote that my mission in life was to use the gifts God has given me to make a difference in the world. LWR is one of the ways I have been able to do that, and I am so thankful for the opportunity.”
