Increasing Agriculture Production and Supporting Fisheries in Order to Improve Living Conditions in Coastal areas

The Northwest department of Haiti is one of the poorest, driest and most food insecure parts of the country. The food insecurity situation which has plagued this area has worsened in recent years. Reports have shown that a result of food insecurity in this region, 117,310 people will require urgent action to protect their livelihood and prevent malnutrition. Furthermore, the lack of infrastructure, inappropriate use of resources, unemployment and difficult climatic conditions make obtaining an adequate level of crop production in order to cope with food insecurity and family income in Bombardopolis and Baie de Henne.

LWR, in partnership with ADEMA will address these issues by improving food security through increased production of food crops which will be adapted specifically to the region and increase family incomes through improved production and marketing of fisheries.

Participating families will directly benefit from:

  • Increased production of food crops such as cassava, sorghum and pigeon peas through establishment of community agricultural inputs stores, distribution of improved and drought resistant varieties of common food crops, and training on climate Smart agricultural practices.
  • Improved fishing volumes with environmentally sound fishing practices through establishment of community fishery inputs stores, improvement of fishing equipment, and best practices for sustainable fishery management.
  • Increasing Access to basic foods for the most vulnerable in these communities through cash for work.
  • Increased income for women in processing agricultural products through equipment for improved processing of cassava, training on business management and good manufacturing practices, and training on quality and product diversification.
  • Improved income from agriculture through establishment of local processing centers for fruits, and identification of marketing opportunities for processed goods.
